Former FCEP President Receives 2007 Martin J. Gottlieb Award

Physician, Advocate and Educator Dr. David Seaberg Honored with 2007 Gottlieb Award

ORLANDO, FLA. – David Seaberg, MD, FACEP, who served as the president of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians from 2002-03, is the 2007 recipient of the Martin J. Gottlieb Award. The award was created in 2004 by Mel Gottlieb, Martin’s father, to recognize individuals who embrace Martin’s strong belief and example of supporting and leading emergency medicine advocacy efforts. The award memorializes the life’s work of Martin, who passed away in 2004. The award presentation took place during the 2007 Symposium by the Sea, at the Naples Grande Resort and Club, in Naples.

“This is truly an honor,” said Dr. Seaberg, who accepted the award from Mel Gottlieb. “Marty was such a strong supporter of emergency medicine in the state of Florida. It’s up to all of us to continue to build on the work that Marty was doing.”

Dr. Seaberg sits on the Boards for both the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Medicine Learning & Resource Center, and was recently named the new Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Health Science Center Campus in Chattanooga, one of three College of Medicine campuses that are part of the UT Health Science Center. He leaves the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he served as professor and chairman for the Department of Emergency Medicine, to accept the position. He attended medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed his residency training in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Seaberg is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management. He has authored more than 125 publications, book chapters and abstracts. He has also received numerous teaching and research awards and has been a leader in Florida with regard to medical and hospital aspects of domestic security. He also founded the University Alliance for Weapons of Mass Destruction Education and served as co-chair of the Health/Medical/ Hospital/EMS Committee of the State Work Group for Domestic Security.

Past recipients of the award include Michael Zappa, MD, FACEP (2006) and David Vukich, MD, FACEP (2005).The Florida College of Emergency Physicians (FCEP) represents more than 1,100 emergency physicians in the state of Florida. FCEP members represent the health care safety net of Florida’s residents and visitors. More than seven million patients seek care annually in Florida emergency departments. FCEP was founded on Oct. 15, 1971 and is headquartered in Orlando.
